marine works
Smith & Davies Ltd is highly skilled in underwater excavation, resource consent marine investigations, and marina maintenance.
Showcase projects include:
• Artificial reefs at Kohimaramara Beach and St Heliers Bay, Auckland, for the Auckland City Council. We constructed two artificial reefs for the sand replenishment project at Kohimarama Beach and were subsequently contracted to construct similar reefs, incorporating stormwater outlets, at St Heliers Beach. At Kohimaramara, Smith and Davies formed sandcrete contours along the seabed out to about 50 metres offshore at either end of the beach. The natural pools and peaks of the contours not only contain the drift of sand from the replenished beach, they support marine life within a matter of weeks.
• Orakei Marina, Hobson Bay, Auckland, for Orakei Marina Development Ltd. This $4.3 million project was completed in March 2006, and involved the excavation of the seabed within the 172-berth marina site and formation of a fabric-encased perimeter bund (28 metres wide on seabed to five metres wide above sea level. Graded rocks up to 1.5 metres deep stabilised the bund and consolidated the breakwater, which was then topped with reno mattresses to form a walkway and fishing platform.
• Investigative work, Wairoa River Maritime Village, Clevedon, for Waiora Canal Development Partnership. A barge and excavator was used to extract geological samples from the proposed construction site. Our investigative work also comprised monitoring silt and current flows.
