Induction training introduces all new staff to the company and our
health and
safety practices.
All operators are trained towards their SiteSafe Passports and, for
drivers, their
DriverSafe Passports.
Sharp on safety
Safety and corporate integrity are highly prized values in our company
- we will
not compromise them.
Smith and Davies Ltd was one of the first companies to apply to be
part of the ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices (WSMP) and to
achieve a good outcome following the audit. We are still part of the
WSMP programme.
We employ a fulltime Health and Safety manager and our structured
safety management system complies with Occupational Health and Safety
Management Systems New Zealand Standard 4801: 2001. Our safety performance
standard is consistently high.
Experts behind the wheel
All of our drivers are given the opportunity to gain National Certificates
in
Commercial Road Transport (Goods Service), within the New Zealand
Qualifications Authority framework. External industry trainers linked
to the ITO are used.
The company’s SAFED ( Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving) Program, requires
a driver to undergo an annual driving audit. Our clients can rest
assured that our drivers have received the necessary tuition to do
the job safely and correctly.
Our innovative Workplace Driver Training Scheme is an intensive programme
for Class 2 licensed drivers to graduate to a full Class 5 driver
licence.
Easy on the environment
All Smith and Davies staff members are committed to reducing the amount
and harmfulness of our wastes and to making the most efficient use
of natural and other resources used in day-to-day tasks.
That commitment is embodied in our Environmental Management Plan as
well as in
our staff training programmes, which focus on practices that will
assist in
avoiding environmental incidents. Training also covers remedial actions
in case
of accidents and emergencies affecting the environment.
Examples of our environmentally-friendly practices include:
• Specialised washing facilities
• Filtering depot surface water runoff
• Our Mercedes Benz trucks bought since 1995 all comply with Euro2
standards
• Specialised contaminated site cleaning capability
• Forestry contracts audited to ensure minimal environmental disturbance
The company’s monthly newsletter updates all staff members on the
latest health and safety and environmental news and best practices.
